Residential service disconnect?

Re: Residential service disconnect?

As I said you may have different equipment available in your area.

But around here if you ask for a 400 amp meter socket what you get has a rating of 320 continuous 400 max.

Above that we go to CTs.

This 400/320 socket is accepted around here by inspectors and the utility's for 400 amp OCP.

I have never used one of these with two 200 amp panels but I have used them many times with a single 400 amp OCPD.

If the load exceeds 320 amps for more than 3 hours the 400 amp service is undersized in the first place.

Thanks Roger :)

Re: Residential service disconnect?

In my area if we ask for a 400a meterbase you get a Milbank k series. The meter bolts in,and I believe the base is rated for 400a continuous load.

Bob,don't quote me,but I think the k series goes up to 600a bolt-in but not sure if the can is the same size.

Well if there is one thing I have learned from these forums is never say never.

It seems that someplace will always have a different way of doing things.

Not different bad, just different. :)

Re: Residential service disconnect?

Thats why I like to see posters like you and the others from the "big city" tell how you do things. It's surprising to me how many methods others use that will work for me,I just had never thought of them.

Re: Residential service disconnect?

in my area the poco do carry 320 class socket and also the 400 boltin is allready reclassifed as 600 amp socket and the 600 Amp socket is rated for 480 amp contiounes and it will be very common with commercal and large resdentital area anything more than 480 contious amps will go with ct's ( the 600 amp socket will take full 600 amp for short duration) .. yes milbank do make 600 amp boltin meter socket i don't have the number with me but that what i been using in commercal area and work pretty nice around here.

Re: Residential service disconnect?

Here In NW Indiana the POCO limits the single phase meter to a 320 for up to 400 amp. Ct's above that. and 3-phase it's a 200 amp 7 or 5 jaw, CT's above that.

Re: Residential service disconnect?

hi russ:

yes the milbank is the same size as 400 amp verison.

the catalog number is U4664-X-8502 or U4664-X-8507

this is single phase 400 amp socket.

it is about 18 inch wide and about 36 inch high and i belive itis about 6 or 7 inch deep this is rather pretty large box but it have pleanty room for the conductors to bend it if nessecary.

also they have the three phase verison also

the single phase number ( Landis/Gyr) aka Siemens

K4-UT 9810-8597 + lugs

three phase verison

K-7T 9817-8512 +lugs
K-7T 9817-8507 for underground that is 400 amp verison

the 600 amp listing here

single phase Milbank #'s
U4664-X-8502 or U4664-X-8507
( both 400 and 600 amp have same number )

L/G K4-UT 9810-9502

Three phase verison
L/G K-7 9817-9506

bear in mind a quick warning if you use the L/G box say K-4 meter socket it is too small for this useage the size is 14" wide X 26"high X 5" deep
the reason becaues if you use bigger than 350kcm cables it will have very diffuctally to bend to the lug pads

all the meter number i mention is ratied for all voltage including 277/480 3 ph 4 wires

and also the 3 ph box is slightly more larger than single phase verison the size is about 20 inch wide and about 43 inch hieght the depth about near 7 inch deep

and my poco useing the 600 amp electronic meter socket now before the old style was rated for 400 amps so it is big diffrence there.

merci , marc

p.s. this is 600 class meter. rated for 480 amp continous. 600 amp intermittent. if continous 600 amp rating is need use the 600 amp ct cabinets.

if you want more information i will leave my poco website here:

www.wisconsinpublicservice.com

they have few listing for meter service size and regulations it might help you here

(p.s.s. to mod. if this is not approve to use the website you can remove it if need to thanks )

Re: Residential service disconnect?

I have installed hundreds of these 320 amp sockets for 300 and 400 amp residential services.
work slick and are nicer in appearance on the out side of houses. Opps wife just mentioned how long we have been doing this, make that more than hundreds.
