We changed out a 200A service panel that was in a house basement. The basement walls were furred out at some point, and the remodelers placed a hinged access door over the electrical panel. We swapped out the panel, but now the inspector is requiring the new panel be brought flush to the (newer) wall, eliminating the need for the access hatch.

Panel location clearly violates 110.26, but full compliance would require changing the building structure. How have you all handled these situations?

Moving the entire panel out flush with the wall sounds like a nightmare. I agree with pton install a 32" wide door.

Well, thanks for the replies. I ended up just pulling it forward. It can be hard to define what all is required when touching work with existing violations.
