Re: RESIDENTIAL WIRING BIDS

Great topic. Time and materials is the ONLY way I will take on remodeling. Around here (SE MA) we get $70 for an electrician and $40 for a helper per hour. We charge travel one way. We mark up materials 30% but have negotiated 20% on larger projects and 10% on large individual items such as generators, transformers, ect. The reason I go to 10% on large individual items is that they are covered by the manufactures warantee and will be serviced by them should something go wrong.

That's true as well Jim, I think they way you look at it often depends on how many other people you have to support. If you employ several men, you may find yourself taking "break-even" jobs just to keep the guys busy at their wage, even if it's nothing in your pocket.

Some folks have the luxury of running bids high and not bothering with jobs that don't pay out well, it just really varies depending on ones given situation. Personally I work for a company where I bid and perform my own work, but am not subject to any of the liability or overhead, as a result my bids run high, because I don't care to work for just my hourly wage.

Anyway, a direct answer: We bill $85 for a journeyman, $65 for a helper (65/45 on jobs over 40 hours) with a healthy material mark-up. T&M is the safest bidding process, otherwise you can really end up in a hassle over "unspecified" devices, etc.

Re: RESIDENTIAL WIRING BIDS

On a job as described above your'e better of charging T & M to make any money and you probably will not cheat the owner or your self. On the original post in the NYC area some guys are charging anywhere from $ 60-100 and up per unit. Fixtures not included. GFI,AFCI and 30A and up is extra $$$$. Check a previous post on service pricing. Over 60 responses.

Re: RESIDENTIAL WIRING BIDS

I just bid a job on changing a house into an office. Tear out all the old electric and install new using MC cable. The catch was no holes in the walls, fish to old boxes changing out the clamps from NM to MC. Bid it at $130 an opening. Service and communication was extra. I will never bid this type of job by the opening again. Made money but not much. I am located in NE Ohio and for new services pricing is $1000 for 100 Amp $1300 for 200 Amp.
