Is it permissible to install line side cables on the load side of a disconnect if it is properly labeled? I'm trying to find any code references on whether this is permissible.

It seems to me that in most cased an AHJ could probably say it's a violation of 110.3(B).

Disconnect is somewhat generic term. "Safety switch" style - the moving blades need to be the load side of the switch I think, especially if they are exposed. Fused switches must have the fuse on the load side so you can service the fuses when the switch is open.

It may be permitted by 404.6(C)Exception if properly labelled.

Thanks for everyone's feedback. The issue I'm having is the utility company wants a safety switch on the line side of the meter. Their schematic shows the safety switch being wired backwards as stated above. I was looking to see if this was acceptable. I spoke with one of their engineers, and of course, they don't have a clue.....

In closing I'd like to say that the utility company has confirmed that their wiring diagram was wrong. This is now a non-issue. Thanks for the responses!

Just to close out the non issue, if the disconnect is a breaker, you need to respect any manufacturer labels of line and load, and there can be sound engineering reasons for it.

Open blade disconnects ultimately can handle power flowing either direction without complication. The line/load orientation matters regarding which side remains energized when the switch is in the off/open position, not necessarily which direction power flows. The side that remains energized needs to be on the line side, so opening the switch deenergizes the open blades and fuses, and the energized line terminals are covered by the plastic safety shield (if the switch is built to have one).
