Right hand or left hand motor which is it?

What is correct terminology for either a right hand or left hand motor, in respect to pecker head (or j-box) I think a standard setup is a right hand (straddle motor with shaft in front of you, pecker head is on right) Am I right? We have been arguing over this (among other things) at work.
 
most all the motors we work on will run eather way clockwise or counter clock wise, but if you look from non driven sside, well you get what i mean.
 
I think you mean clockwise and counter-clockwise. I've always thought it was while looking at the end of the shaft.

I can't answer your question, but I think I understand it a little better than the other posters. My guess is pecker head is on the right side. I always order by the number on the old motor. I am maintenance, I never paid attention to the left, right. I will look at some tomorrow and get back.

From Motor Terminology, an Emerson Motor Technologies (U.S. Electrical Motors) publication:
Rotation (Rot.) – Direction in which shaft rotates:
CW = clockwise
CCW = counterclockwise
Rev (CW/CCW) = reversible or bi-directional rotation which can be changed.​
I concur this would be viewing from the [work] end of the shaft.

As for peckerhead position, it's been my experience they can be in almost any orientation around the body of the motor. :)
 
A quick check of some old motor catalogs didn't turn up the term left or right. I assume you are referring to the mechanicla position of the junction box in relation to the shaft extension. The Siemens catalog calls it Assembly F-1 or Assembly F-2 for floor mount design.

US Motor website uses the same terminology:

F-1: J-box is on right when you straddle the motor and the shaft is straight up. (Or look at the j-box on the side of the motor and the shaft is extending out the end on the right.)

F-2: J-box is on left.

Perhaps, but in the interest of clear communication, the term will persist. There is little doubt what is being referred to when that particular term is used when speaking of motors.

I thumb my nose at political correctness. :D

I just hope the term doesn't get censored out like it did in a thread some time ago...

Because any other term doesn't make sense when talking about industrial motors.

I never knew for sure, but I always thought it was "fan end" in your belly ( or the correct term would be OPE or Oposite drive END), pecker head on the left or right, and thats what you call it.......
 
Ok so now I guess the argument is look from shaft end or fan end, But straddling motor and shaft out the front (not up - haha) most motors I have dealt with pecker head is on the right. But I guess the verdict is still out if this is a right hand or not.

As for the political correctness, we can't use the term pecker head on work orders here at work, we have to say junction box, but anyone in the know knows what a pecker head is when referring to motors.

I've worked on [industrial 3?] motors with the "terminal enclosure" on the right, left, top, and various other positions around the body of the motor. As to designating it's position, I will speculate it is determined looking from the fan end, when there are and with mounting "feet" on the bottom... and I emphasize this is pure speculation. The issue is moot regarding end-mount motors.

In many applications the pecker head has to be on different sides due to the application. We have a lot of machines that would prohibit the pecker head from being on the right hand side. My "motor man" said that any thing you look at in relation to a motor should be accessed from the shaft end. Such as rotation, position of pecker head, location of mounts, ETC.
