jro, read 370-17(c)exception, it will answer your question concerning romex installation in plastic boxes. Notice that it allows NM cable non-secured to single gang boxes only. Multi-gang plastic boxes must have integral (or field installed) clamps.

Hoping this does not stray to far off the original question, but my AHJ does not recognize the friction clamps in a plastic box as an acceptable installed clamp. He wants to see a clamp with a screw. I had some old bakelite "plastic" boxes that had keepers (clamps) with screws and he liked those, but he does not like the new all plastic boxes that have friction type clamps. The friction clamps are clearly labeled as being a UL approved clamp, but he doesn't like them. I'm talking about blue boxes, yellow boxes, grey boxes, etc.-- the plastic ones. Once you stick an NM in those boxes you cannot pull it out but it's not good enough for my AHJ-- especially in a "remodel" use (where there is no easy way to set a staple within 8" or 12" of the box). Metal is about the only remodel box that he likes-- if they have integral clamps-- or with knockouts & a Romex connector. I haven't asked him about his policy about multi-gang boxes that lack screw clamps-- since he doesn't consider friction clamps to be clamps. Sorry to go long-- but I wanted to cover all the bases. Thank you for allowing me to shake things off during this time of new beginnings for me while I get my legs back.

I use a 2" SER connector on the top of the panel and run all the romex through. Always passes inspection, so far...

Re: romex wires into a service panel

I'm looking at some older Romex connectors and they all have the UL bug on them. They also list minimum wire sizes (i.e.- a 1" connector is stamped ".560 Min. Wire Dia."). The 1-1/4" connectors are also stamped ".560 Min. Wire Dia.". My old 2" has the UL bug but no Min. is cast into it.

I'm speculating here that your smaller NM's won't meet the Min. Wire Dia. for the 2" connector.

PS: Does an SER connector vary from a Romex connector?

Your inspector has no authority to make you use the material he likes. If you are using an approved NM box with internal clamps he has to accept it. What's next, is he going to say the that he will only accept Square D loadcenters? This inspector needs to be fired immediately in my opinion. I might just have to do a job in your area to meet this guy.

I would suggest this guy submit a code change. Otherwise it is not a matter of what he does or does not like.
