Please Provide the Code information, when installing new HVAC on the Roof, Service Receptacle and light is required?

I don't know of any code that requires a light for the a/c on the roof however, 210.63 is the art. for the receptacle

In my area it is some sort of mechanical code, if the HVAC unit has a gas fired furnace in it then we have to provide a service light. It is an issue that gets missed often. Kind of a last minute scramble to get it in for a sharp plumbing inspector.

Plug a trouble light into the recep.

y'all are too nice...first post and a request for a code reference that simple...suckers...

Are you saying we should attack the op because he asked a simple question?:-?

Is that a local thing, or a general code? :-?
I ask because I just did 3 RTUs with gas heat. I have never heard of that requirement, but I can't recall if I have ever done a RTU w/ gas. (Usually electric heat)

nope, i'm saying we breed incompetence and apathy...then we reap the rewards...

If one was installed, we would, I know from past that an outlet and Light must be wired in, need code Number to prove...

I gave you the code number for the recep. The NEC does not require a light for a rooftop unit. As Bob has said perhaps there is a heating code in your area that requires it. Bob lives in Mass. if you are from there then look in the building or heating code.

What am i missing here.If the thing is being serviced at night it is an 911 call and he needed flash light to get on roof anyways. Why should we spend this kind of added cost for something unlikely to ever be needed.Good grief the service guy needs to buy a plug in light.

Yes, but it is tough to work on things holding a flash light.

Here a no heat call is pretty much an emergency and customers expect it fixed day or night.

There are used in cold climates.

As I mentioned the code quicks in when there is a gas fired furnace in the RTU which in this area is almost all of them.

We usually use these,

they do not cost much and are easy to install, two gang box for the GFCI and the switch for the light fixture.

Any idea why it is required for gas fired furnaces. It seems if you are going to require it then it shouldn't matter what kind of furnace it is.

I have been poking around and it originates from NFPA 54

That being the case it could not apply to oil fired or electric furnaces. I also suspect it applies in lot more states then just MA.
