You do not need to add 25% to a nameplates MCA for hermetic compressors. This is already factored in. 440.4B (NEC 2002)
I agree that a #6 thhn at 75 degree terminations is perfectly fine, assuming VD is not an issue.
The 70 amp max overcurrent doesn't sound quite right, as it is awful close to the MCA rating, but if that is on the nameplate, then it must not be exceeded. Per 440.6 & 440.6A (NEC 2002)
