Have a roof mounted fractional horsepower room exhaust fan with three different windings for different speeds. Does anyone make a regular 4 position rotary switch (off lo med hi) that is not solid state to change speeds?
Or do I have to go on the roof every time I want to change speeds. I can't seem to locate a switch any where.
Appreciate any help

Sure. Just use an old-school AB Bulletin 800 4 position rotary switch.

The Leviton-875573 does up to 3 amps.

Or, if you can get away with two speeds, you can use a center-off toggle switch, or a single-pole switch and a 3-way.

why dont you just put the switch where you can reach it?? You could call an electrician.

The problem is that he has no (convenient) way to switch among the three speed wires. If he runs the four conductors to the desired indoor location, he still needs a SP3T (plus off) switch.

I think the roof-top speed selection method was a bit of cynicism.

Feed the controler in the room it is exhausting and run a 4 wire up to the roof from there. It is probably a mushroom type squirrel cage fan and just screw a deep handi box in the dome Splice the neutral through and break all 3 speeds with a 3pole snap switch hp rated and call it a day. unless the motor is 50 miles away we are only talking about about 50 bucks in material upgrades. Mostly for the 4 wire. The rest you would have needed to install anyway.

Milly is asking about a 3-speed controller, not a 3-pole disconnect.

I was confused to Larry but I think quogueelectric was trying to point out that a 3 pole disconnect will be needed at the roof if a 3 speed switch is used inside.

The only other option would be to run the feed to the roof first, use a single pole for it then send the feed back down to the speed control.

A breaker lock-out or lockable switch couldn't be used?

IMO this fan would be covered by 430.102(B) and that requires the disconnecting means to be in sight of the motor.

Even if is is an appliance it is likely to be more then 1/8 HP and 422.32 requires compliance with 430.
