A class I had a few months back said in 2017 you needed to stay 3' away from roof valleys for the firemen to walk. Is that so and is it in the NEC or another code book? (IRC, IBC) Thanks.

I have found that if you have a 3ft path between arrays on opposite sides of a valley or hip then AHJs will accept that. Generally I have found that the codes are very much not very specific and comprehensive at addressing every real-world roof situation. On a pitched residential roof, the spirit of the requirements is providing adequate access to the ridge where firefighters will vent the roof.

We use 18" from hips and valleys and 36" from ridges.
