Roughing nightmares in NJ

Hi all,

Out here in a particular borough of northern NJ, I just had an inspector bust my chops about the "whips" I left out side for the future receptacles and lights on the house. He demanded them to be installed in a metal box and grounded before the rough was finished. I have never had this problem before. Arlington makes siding blocks specifically listed for the support of fixtures and a block listed for the support of receptacles, and he WILL NOT accept them in his town. He also made me change out the single gang blue carlon plastic boxes if the LITTLE piece of plastic fell out!!! Not to mention there is a staple within 8" of the box. That little piece of plastic could not hold anyhting, even if it tried. What gives with this guy???

I say you need to have a serious, but cool and calm discussion with his supervisor.

He can't just make up and enforce his own little set of rules; he needs legal backing.

If that was his words then you must take it over his head. It is not his town and unless you have local codes then he can only push for nec. He might not like the material you pick but if ul and listed for the use and installed to code he best start likeing it. Wish you luck if this is some small hick town.

What's with Nj inspectors lately?? ,.. Make sure you mention 314.17 (c) exception and throw in this in as well from Carlon.

The single gang nonmetallic box, B120A does not have integral clamps,
only knockouts. For nonmetallic-sheathed cable, Romex, is a clamp where
the cable enters the box required?

Clamps are not required for single gang boxes. See 314.17(C) Exception of the
2002 NEC (370-17(c) Exception of the 1999 NEC).

I think he is talking about the piece of plastic where cables entered the box. Sometimes you can fit the wire by spinning the plastic piece .90 degrees on it's axis. And chances are, it'll fall off.

That inspector would hate my work, I knock them right out of there. The staple within a couple inches of the box is what secures the wire.

1999? 2002? I mean, 314.17(C) does have the same exception in the 2008 code. Just curious why you cited those two years?

I know who your talking about and get ready for a real tough time.
If you think the rough in was hard, wait until the final, I truly wish you luck , no one else seems to have any there.

He is not permitted to choose which electrical products he wants. If Arlington makes a listed product and you want to use it it's not within his power to prohibit the use. I would call the DCA and have them straighten this guy out once and for all.

I don't know who you're talking about, but someone needs to call him out and challenge him on his god complex.

Good luck and I hope you win without it costing too much.

I'll just take a wild guess and say you're probably working in the township of Mahwah, NJ. If not, don't bother doing any work there either - you'll just run into the same situation.;) People in this township are starting to wonder why the prices for electrical work are so high. You're almost guaranteed to fail both a rough and final inspection on a new residential installation. Time is money.

Because Carlon was getting so many question about the use of their boxes they published a FAQ and I would guess that it was after the 2002 but before the 2005 cycle , I was quoting it . I forgot to use the quote feature , but I did state that it was from Carlon .

Thank you. That makes sense.

Some how i have the feeling that even if you win this battle you will loose in the war.You have an inspector on a power trip and he will try to get even. Most inspectors are not like this but when he say not in his town then you have a problem and his boss is likely related.

I hear ya Jim!! I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Oakey what part of NJ are you in? Is the inspectors initials J.L. that you are referring to?
