Can we use the inside of a RTU as race way to the bell box gfi receptacle mounted on outside ?

As a raceway, probably not. As a space to run a cable, FMC or LFMC in then yes excluding the plenums in it.

I don't really see a rooftop a/c unit in article 300 as an acceptable raceway. I've done as you suggest, but I run MC cable inside the RTU (poked up from within the confines of the curb kit) and not conductors without a raceway.

Cables and raceways OK, open condutors not OK

I've been called on that.

My contention was that the RTU was loaded with open conductors from the factory. What harm is a couple more?

His reply was a red tag

I really wish more of the HVAC guys would start ordering their RTU's with the factory disconnect and receptacle. In a world of competitive bidding, this isn't really happening unless the contractor is bidding on the whole MEP package.

Exactly, life would be easy and units would look better too but they want to offer low price and GC just don't see the differance. The EC can't count on it so he assumes he will provide. The 25 foot rule needs changed too as it drives cost up.
