Customer called mid afternoon with "Can you come up today?" Got there in time to see the top of a several thousand gallon fuel tank being buried and hear "I guess I forgot to tell you about this." Private tank, not for public. Diesel only. It has been awhile so while talking to the equipment supplier he says "everyone wires them with seals". Okay, why. "Just the way its done." I fire off an email to State inspector for clarification on classification. 514.3(A) He would be happy with no classification but I still have to make the State Fire Marshal happy. Quicker & easier to just put in sealoffs than chase him down. All done with rigid etc everywhere & the FM shows up the next day. I ask him & he says no classification needed but he doubts the Electrical Inspector would allow it. I have a hunch they both want sealoffs etc even though not required.

It depends on the flash-point of the fuel that is put into the tank. Some diesel requires the same wiring as is done with Group D (gasoline) and some is unclassified. If you don't know, either have an engineer do the classifying (preferred method) or wire it for Group D material. :)
