Slowly but YES to inforce 3 points of contact by OSHA. Now this is you big boy contractors i mean.

I do not see how 1926.1053(b)(21)
Each employee shall use at least one hand to grasp the ladder when progressing up and/or down the ladder.

even remotely supports the GC's position of banning ladders.

Standard Interpretations
11/28/2007 - Whether OSHA requirements prohibit working from a portable stepladder and, if not, whether fall protection is required. 29 CFR 1926.1053(b)

Unless part of the story is being left out - IMHO - the GC is just asking to be slammed with extra costs for his "opinion".

BTW, all contractors are subject to OSHA ~ not just the "big boys".

No this contractors in their own saftey rules say you can not maintain 3 points of contact on step ladders this is also like useing tie off points over 6ft on ladders

Yes, one major GC around here is crazy over it, no Ladders, if on a ladder body harness over six feet period!

Sizzer lifts, rolling scaffold, scaffold and body harness at all times.

Even when on a platform, what's the third point? :-?

This contractor must like to spend a lot of money....every elevated task would require a minimum of 2 men....one to hold the material, one to install the material...add a third man if a level is needed

Yup...equally ridiculous in most situations.

But hey...as long as it's the GC's money following, who cares?

I'd make a suggestion at the next safety meeting that all personal over 6' tall must be tied off at all times to reduce the risk of slip/fall injuries.
:D

Oh nice......they didn't seem to mind about properly supporting CRANES on the sides of buildings until it caused them to lose money (NOT LIVES), but now they are all willy nilly over any possibility of bad press in regards to safety procedures to support the pending lawsuits...........sometimes human behavior can be outright disgusting.

I am guessing but its just possible they experienced a rash of ladder related accidents, and rather than being proactive they overreacted.

Its undeniably a whole lot safer to work out of a bucket, off a lift, or on a platform ladder. But its not always as practical as might be desired.

Although my employer also has training materials addressing a 3-point contact rule, I can't find it in OSHA 1910 (work requirements) or 1926 (construction).

What is meant by 3 points of contact according to OHSA.What section would we find that in?

The link above will take you to:
Ladders. - 1926.1053

It is "assumed" points 1 and 2 are a persons feet...the third point is one hand while ascending/descending the ladder.

Been there, read that. It does not mention a 3-point contact requirement. That is an interpretation...

...and as far as the regs go, I can use only my hands to go up and down the ladder without my feet touching the rungs as long as I have one hand grasping the ladder at all times and I am facing the ladder while I'm doing it.
