Same cable for working load and electric current on hoist?

I had a customer ask me today if such a thing exists. He wants to actuate a solenoid at the end of the cable that he drops down to pick up a 25lb load, and then real it up. The solenoid is 12 volt. Would I start looking to crane parts? Marine applications? Has anyone ever seen something like this?
 
I doubt it and the winch spool would need to be set up with slip rings


I would just add a stand alone cord retractor beside the winch.

Heck, you might even be able to find a wireless solution if you are just switching something
 
Well a similar application would be an electromagnet crane. I'm pretty sure they don't use the steel cable as a conductor though.

I guess it also depends on the total vertical travel of the hoist. No matter how you do it, you'll still need 2 conductors to make a circuit. The only way that comes to mind would be to use some cabtire for the solenoid circuit. I've used cabtire to supply power to the trolley holding a motor on a shop hoist before, but that was horzontal travel.
 
Look to the crane makers.

There are plenty of cranes that have a power lead coming down with the hoisting cables.

Sometimes there's a pretty hefty motor as part of the hook assembly, which is used to rotate the load. Or, as already noted, the magnet in some cranes needs power.

The actual cable used? I'll see what I can learn.
 
Thanks for the replies guys. I was at the customer's yesterday and meant to check with the engineer to see if he came up with anything, but forgot. I"ll be back there in a couple weeks and will check in and report back if he comes up with something different than you guys did. Thanks!
