This is now the second time I have ran into a sauna and shower combination in an existing dwelling. It is going to be a rental and I am being asked for a recommendation.
It looks like it all is from the 70's.
A 240V hard wired sauna heater in a floor drained tile shower area? Is this a legal installaiton? I am looking at 424.12. Upon examining the unit it looks like no water can accumulate in the wired sections. The controls are in the sauna / shower but about 4 feet away from the shower head. No weather proof cover for controls as per 404.4. The whole room has a tile floor w/ drain so I am considering it shower space.
Not sure about the listing of the equipment. Perhaps such things were listed to be installed this way? Anybody know of a listed wet location cover for 3 gang sauna control boxes? Or perhaps the box cover is / was listed for the this use?
The service panel is a FPE stab lock
New GFCI breakers are not locally available for FPE / StabLock panels.
So I am looking at a panel change or ordering >$200 breakers for old equipment.
Or leave it as is? Looking for some feed back here.
There is also a indoor 70's hot tub with no GFCI protection as per 680.44.
So I am guessing the equipment was not installed by a electrician or GFCI's were not required in the 70's? Is this grandfathered?
The hard wired hot tub pump and heater does not meet 680.12 there are 2 circuits. 1 for the pump and 1 for the heater both located in a small closet. Installing a spa panel w/ breaker for each circuit and meeting 110.26 working space is going to be tricky.
I am thinking of putting in a common 50A or 60A feeder to the closet, put in a small sub panel with a 50A or 60A GFCI main. Feed the heater and pump from the panel.
and leaving the sauna alone.
Considering 110.26(F)(1) says "the space equal to the width and depth of the equipment"
Can I put the spa panel on the wall in the closet if:
1) The piping for the sauna and the sauna heater are not in the "the space equal to the width and depth of the equipment" required by 110.26(F)(1). This space being the 3" X 10" X 10" spa panel.
2) There is piping for the sauna and the sauna heater in the 3' depth space infront of the panel required by 110.26(A)(1).
?
Thanks in advance!
