Sch 40 vs Sch 80 PVC

The things that are "more subject to damage" is what the code calls "severe physical damage".

My contention is that that type of description is very subjective. Hence why there is such diverging views here on the forum on what should be protected and what shouldn't be.

Here in New England, the AHJ and trade views on physical damage generally tends towards the liberal side (just like everything else.)

Would it be safe to say to use Sched. 40 wherever you might use EMT and Sched. 80 where you'd use GRC?

I don't think so. Schedule 40 PVC can't be installed where subjected to physical damage. EMT can't be installed where subject to severe physical damage. I am not sure the listing for Schedule 80 PVC permits that product to be installed in areas subject to severe physical damage.
