I need to know if schedule 40 is okay to use to feed a 100 amp sub panel. The run will go through the foundation wall into a trench and back up his house where it will be exposed before going back into the house.I said to use schedule 80 because i believed that is what the code says but another electrician told my friend 40 was okay to use.

Schedule 40 is okay as long as it is not subject to damage. Some inspectors around here would make us use schedule 80 when the pvc comes out of the ground and is exposed outdoors. Other inspectors never require it unless it is in a driveway where it may be subject to getting hit by the car.

You can easily transition from 40 to 80. You can also check with the inspector and get his take. This is a very subjective judgement.

I agree with Dennis. It's likely that Sch 40 will suffice unless there's a chance of a car plowing into it.

When coming out of the ground I change to RMC to protect it from damage. When you run PVC up a wall outside after one summer th conduit will look like a drunken snake. I do not recommend running PVC outside above ground.

True, but make sure you chamfer the inside of the sch 80 nicely, otherwise you might be stripping your wire as you pull it. Sch 80 has a smaller ID than schedule 40.
