Anyone read about the accident in VA where four men were electrocuted while putting up a tent? Seems that the tent pole came in contact with some overhead wires. Pole must have been metal. Being inside the tent, they did not notice the wires.

From the AP,
The accident happened Monday when the Scout leaders were setting up a dining tent.
The poles were aluminum. A tragic event that with heart felt sympathy to the boys how have lost their father.

Re: Scout Camp Tragedy:

How senseless. Why? Why under a power line? I caught a glimpse of one picture that appeared to show a power line similar to that of a residential service drop, the type with 3 separate wires. If so there would have been 120v-G which we know can kill. But 4 peaple? Then I would suspect it was probably was a distribution voltage. Boy Scouts 'All Started Screaming'

Re: Scout Camp Tragedy:

It's one thing to be electrocuted because of something that is not expected such at a marina where a person dives into the water and is electrocuted because of incorrectly wired shore power or the child that picked up the damaged extension cord.
Yes, it's 20/20 hind sight in the tent pole incident but why was that location selected and, as for (4) adults one would like to thing that any of them would have put 2+2 together, i.e.tent pole contacting wire=results that are not good.
Or that one would have been an observer if there was a concern for the proximity of the power lines. But we all do dumb things once in a while and get lucky while others are not so lucky.
It is a question of carelessness or ignorance. Either way some mighty fine people lost their lives which is so sad. Sons and daughters lost dads and wives their husbands.

Re: Scout Camp Tragedy:

i always think the power company runs too many safety adds on overhead power lines --- but then every two months or so -- somebody forgets -- life is very fragile but unforgiving when it comes to high voltage!!!
