Do many EC's here install security camera systems? A customer wants me to put a system in that he purchased, looks to me like alot of screwing around. Do most here do these types of installs or farm them out to specific installers? Thanks.

The large EC I work for does it.

IMO the installations are pretty basic and straight forward as long as someone who knows what they are doing chooses the equipment.

The physical install would be ok, it's the interphasing into the pc for the memory and real time viewing that has got me stumped.

That's why I sub it out. Let those who deal with those systems every day worry about the little details.

We don't get involved with programing but we don't give away work either.

For example we have done the security systems for Circuit Cities and Toys R Us.

We are subbed out by the actual security company and they ship us all the equipment already programed for us.

The DVRs, the security panels etc. come ready to go.

Try using his company www.specotech.com. I had them out to a location for a site survey and they were able to give me a parts list for the job. They would also come back out to help with start-up. We would have to buy thru ADI.The installation really didnt look all that difficult but it was nice knowing i could call them with any questions. This job consisted of about 8 inside cameras and 2 outside. 1 monitor,1 DVR recorder, and all the associated cabling. By the way, didnt get the job because the client froze all new projects for the time being. It still might come back up. I'll let you know.

If the store owner got one of those systems that are basically a kit, you really can't screw it up. It's a good way to get your feet wet with the basics. Get a coax and power to each camera (or Cat5e)... that's just wiring. Hook up the switcher, monitor, and the DVR... just plug and play.

Some of these systems can get rather complex. I'm certified on the Phillips (now Bosch) gear, for what it's worth.

I wouldnt give work away at a time like this. Especially low voltage work. For some reason a lot of low voltage work comands big money. You wouldnt beileve what a company is charging this dinner I do work in to install a computer system for placing orders. I say you go for it. Even if you dont hit a homerun you will learn something new. Hey if your in Jersey send it my way! The cable that Marc mentioned is known as siamese cable. Coax and two conductors in one wrap. Very handy.
