Seeking Expertise for Research on Electrical Contractors

If you are getting paid to collect data on such a ridiculous idea- i applaude you...
Max is one of a group of students, learning how to do research, by "conducting research to understand the needs of electrical contractors." The research could very well show that electrical work is not a good field for robotics. But the real purpose is for the students to learn HOW to do research.

But it seems to me many of the fine folk here are feeling threatened. Remember the legend of John Henry...

Threatened? I would not speak for others but me myself- a better word is concerned... there are much more viable apps to research. Economic impact of a.i. and automation for starters.. $30billion to pull wire? Im not too worried.

What makes you think people feel threatened?!

You don't know this. And regardless it is interesting they picked this project, since if the real purpose is just to learn how to do research then many other projects could do just as well.

(Also how is the legend of John Henry supposed to make me feel better? According to the story he died.)

According to the story he died.
Being a middle child, I witnessed my older brother serve as the village idiot.

I see John Henry as the village idiot who chose his battles poorly, and the moral of his story was competing with automation is a losing bet.

I also agree surveys are not a verified or validated form of scientific research.

Soliciting offers for employment is the more likely motive.

Yes, and I am sure other students elsewhere are also learning how to do research by picking other fields.

John Henry died by putting himself in competition with a new technology. There's a lesson to be learned.

I am not going to take responsibility for your feelings.

I always thought, if I only had a small monkey that I could train to do some of the menial tasks of residential wiring 🤔

Crawling across attics
Nailing up switch and receptacle boxes

I'm sure an AI-driven robot could be programmed to "think" enough to help some.

I'm thinking like legs which telescope up to 30 feet so a robot could cut in a floodlight in a soffit

Maybe it could cut and mount plywood for service panel

Somebody mentioned digging. How about a robotic trencher that can install the conduit?

I can dream, but I don't know enough beyond those dreams

Okay I'll take those points, but they are still not valid reasons to have made a claim about what the real reasons behind the survey are. You can be fatalistic about the fact that capital will always try to lower wages and put people out of jobs (though I don't recommend it, actually) but you shouldn't try to deny it happens. (Which you effectively by offering an unsolicited and unwarranted assertion that that's not what this is about.)
