Have huge warehouse with house meter (normal) ,has high volt panel for lights (normal).Has 3 phase 100 amp 120/208 from 10 kv transformer with only one 120 load,a control box for the sprinkler.A stupid 10 watt load and they spent all this to feed it.

Pretty normal here. Gotta keep the landscape green for the Planning Dept.
I think i could find a cheaper way to power the electronics. This is way overkill.A transformer to get 24 volts from 277 must be available. We are not talking high amps. This set up had to cost a few grand.

See that's a different point all together.

I never said that it was the smartest way to do it. To tell you the truth I never really thought about it. I wonder if they do make a transformer so that you could feed just a sprinkler timer.

I'll bet Marc could find one.

I know for a fact that they make 277 to 24 volt transformers. The ones we use for controls in VAV's are 50VA.

Never thought of that. This is what happens when you're out of the field for too long.

Probably just an engineer who is used to doing it that way and never even looked into any other options. Or he could be thinking that sooner or later they may want some plugs in there. Also "sometimes" they put warehouse on the plans and that gives them some outs as far as the building portion goes, but they don't stay warehouses.

I had a plan check come in the other day and I approved it, when we finally got in the field to check it out I said your plans say that there is a 4000 amp 3 phase 480 volt main and that you have a transformer and a 200 amp disconnect. I see a single phase 1200 main and no transformer.

Yeah the engineer never even went out and looked at the site.

I just plan check what they give me and worry about it later. Don't even question what they're doing anymore.

maybe the thought was that somewhere down the line 120V power might be needed, so might as well put it in. maybe even the owner asked for it.

I got the answer today.Building was put up 2 years ago and was a rush on it.Job trailers and temp power was reason.Already paid for so it stayed. Not how we would handled it but up to them.Wonder how much waisted wattage it cost to keep it humming ?
