The manufacturer of the breaker being copied would have to give permission for their competitior to use their name and breaker model.
That's like saying Coke or Pepsi can't name the competitor's brand name in their commercials, but we've all seen them. Any free advertsisng is better than none.

If a competitor used my company name in an ad, people would wonder why my company is the one being used as a comparison.

It's a compliment to be compared against. Who would brag about being better than a lousy company?

... and I've heard reports of breaker/panel combinations that 'felt loose'.
Yeah, I've felt that too, but think about this. Put a Murray breaker in a Murray panel, and It'll "feel loose" right off the bat. Compare that with a good Cutler-Hammer CH and you'll know who's making good stuff and who's making junk.

The T&B breakers are rated for a lot of loadcenters I just looked at one today and on the side of the breaker it listed what it was compatible with, I didn't count but there were alot.

I've noticed that with the Murray-Siemens breakers, which is precisely why I don't like their products. I do like the design of the loadcenters, but the breakers are junk. As for CH-CH, that is as common as a blue moon around here. I'd sooner just opt for QO than the "tan handle" stuff simply because it's highly unpopular.

I think what you are referenceing is one of the "classified " type breakers mentioned earlier in this post. I seem to remember T&B being one of the first to offer such a breaker.

I do alot of commercial work in and around the Boston area Seimens and CH/WH are the most available brands lately, GE is starting to become the one that is hard to come by.

Simple answer.... the UL only checks out certain breakers for use in certain panels. There are "classified replacement" breakers that are rated for a multitude of panels. A Seimens breaker in a GE panel will never fly. Neither one is rated for that combination. I think the only other panel a Siemens breaker is rated for is the old ITE panels.

I agree with marc,on this one its a pretty simple answer,
its either listed for respective panel or not...
