Article 388 does not have the R behind SE. Can SER al Cable be installed in PVC conduit buried underground? What code section deals with SER

SER is a type of SE cable and falls under article 338. SER has 3 insulated conductors and one uninsulated conductor. SEU has two insulated conductors and one bare conductor spiraled around the other two.

So where does USE come into play? I have not heard of buying large size USE

Honestly I couldn't tell you since I've never used it. Maybe someone else who has can fill in the blanks.

USE is typically a triplex set 4/0 4/0 2/0 then use a single conductor for then EGC Type XHHW maybe dual rate as USE

I think 4-conductor USE (called URD around here) can be had, but I've only used 3-conductor.

Check out this link to see a list of discussions about this topic in the past.

IMO, SER underground in conduit is legal but ill-advised. URD is a better choice, and PVC with conductors better still.

EEC, What is your intended use. SE or SER is not direct burial but installed for interior disconnect or HVAC loads in residential. SER used may still be allowed on exterior surface runs for panel entrance hookups. USE is used as direct burial, in triplex form is used for drop service, and if used in interior will not be allowed unless run in conduit.

Does USE come 4/0-4/0-4/0-w/grd
In a way. Check out Alcan's website, on the page I'm linking to, you can download and look at the specs for the different cables.

Essentially, you would have to use quadriplex cable and use one of the conductors for a ground instead.

Another option, the one I would lean toward myself, is getting three conductor USE and installing a single USE in the same trench with the others, and using that as the EGC.

Hi Marc, Yer right, the feeder comes in aluminum 4-4-4-4 Al AA-8000 series cable for 200 amp rating and is available for 100 and 150 amp sizes also.

As Pierre states, SEU or SER cannot be below ground even in conduit.

The U in SEU or USE stands for Underground.
