Ser Cable

I am trying to find a description of SER cable, and where it's use is permitted and not permitted. I have looked under SERVICE Entrance CABLE. SEC cable, and USE cable, but there is no listing, any where in the code book. Can someone please point this out to me. TY. I have encountered some residences that are using this as SERVICE ENTRANCE CABLE, from point of attchment to the power co. meter pan. and the code book says that only SE or USE cable may be used as service Entrance cable.

SE cable is covered under Article 338. SER is a type of SE cable which is round and contains three insulated and one uninsulated conductor. SEU is the flat SE cable and contains two insulated and one uninsulated conductor that is spiraled around the other two. Uses permitted are listed in Article 338.

The extra conductor is unused (i.e. wasted) when used for a 1-phase service. This cable is meant to be used after a main disconnect, where the EGC and neutral separate, never to merge again.

SER cable

I Know what SER cable is, however, there is no mention of it in the code, only SE and USE. That was the question. If you can find a referance to it by all means lease post the reply, because it doesn't seem to be mentioned.

In the past, it was "determined" that SER falls under SE rules.

As Larry said and I mentioned in my first post SER and SEU are types of SE cable. They both come under Article 338 Service Entrance Cables.

Think of it like MC cable. There are many types of MC cable but not every one is mentioned in the NEC.

THE proper way to refer to this cable is type SE style R. Take a look at the outer sheath and you will see it labeled this way.

The other stuff is type SE style U.

Both are covered in article 338.
