As much as I have fought about SER not being directly prohibited from running in an underground raceway I can not in good conscience tell you to go for it. Use some XHHW or THWN etc.

I can't wait until NY gets on the '08 NEC. :)

I happened to have '08 on my desk when I read the post.
I will say, '08 makes it more clear than '02.

This question came up today in a CEU class, the instructors answer was that SER is not listed for a wet location. On the side of a house is OK but not underground. By the way the instructor was the head state electrical inspector.

That is also what the instructor at my class said.

'The outside of a house is not a wet location'

It seems like if it was already prohibited they would not have had to change the NEC.

can i install 2/3 ser cable in 2 inch pvc underground for a barn feeder. is there any issues with heating . will feed a 60 amp subpanel
Maybe, maybe not, but that's an expensive way to do it. "Mobile home feeder cable" or individual XHHW's would be cheaper.

IMO it was never permitted, and I failed many contractors for it

I know thats how you feel and what you did, I don't forget much.

I also know they do not change the NEC for no reason.

I recently went to my continuing education class, taught by a pair of inspectors. One them read the change and a student said "Yeah except for temporary use" Both inspectors laughed and said well yes of course.
