Probably the bare equipment grounding conductor.

I had a call about someone’s range quit working properly. I found that it was fed by an aluminum SEU cable that ran thru a dirt crawl space and a portion of that cable laid on the soil and consequently the neutral conductor within the jacket had reduced to nothing where it was in contact with the dirt. One of the weirdest things to see, as every strand went from its normal circular mill and evenly reduced down to fine hairs till there was nothing.
