For those of you who have had service body trucks or worked from them...
Some service trucks come on pick up truck bodies and some come on cut off bodies and some come on medium duty truck bodies, which is better or what's the difference. And also how important is 4 wheel drive on your truck. I live in Maryland and I have a farm in Va. I am mostly doing large new homes on undeveloped tracts of land so I am a little concerned with getting stuck in the mud.
I want to be able to carry all my tools and stuff a generator and still have space to put a large chandelier in, or maybe a 16 unit meter stack and the switch and all the other associated stuff, and maybe a 48" gang box.

Any thoughts?

Re: Service Body Trucks

Fellow Marylander here. Two of my subs both got the medium duty Chevy Box Vans (the cutoffs). The both absolutely love them. Both are coming from pickups. One has the 4WD and the other doesn't. We have one of the big diesel GMCs. We're in the Frederick area. I would recommend the 4WD cutoff. There is tons of room and you can configure the inside as you wish.

I'll try to get you some more info on the cutoffs if you want.

Re: Service Body Trucks

I would stay clear of putting the chandelier in.Seems like it would sway quite a bit on the hills.Maybe some nice looking sconces would fit the application better. :D

Re: Service Body Trucks

I would assume they went to Criswell Chevy to get there trucks...

A medium duty seems like such a big beastly vehicle, and the master who is making me a master does a lot of work in DC and I think of roaring into downtown, not being able to find a space big enough for it and just parking it in the street turning on the yellow lights and declaring myself to be arrived. :)

I am interested in the more info... did they get just a box body or did they get the box body that has several compartments that open from the outside?

I am probably going to get a used one first and it won't be till after the weather breaks in the spring, but I want the info. If the planets line up right and the price of wire goes back down the way the price of Gas especially in Frederick, I might try to get a new one.
While I have you

I understand being able to configure the inside of the box truck the way you want with shelves and what not,
But I wonder about the outside accesible shelves,

When I was leaving work friday I was thinking it would be so great to be able to throw tools in seperate sections in the truck, throw the ladders on the top, and the trash in the back, lock it up and forget about it for the weekend.

By the way, did they get like 3500 series trucks or bigger like 3500 super duty or a 4500 or 5500 or 6500 truck?
I hope I am not

Re: Service Body Trucks

They both got 3500s. They actually aren't as big as you think. Anything you get will be a pain in the *** in DC. I was wrong about the 4WD. Both got 2WD. One has the compartments on the outside and the other has just the shelves on the inside. Both have the racks on top for ladders, etc. You could definitely lock it up for the weekend. Both are pretty sweet and not very expensive. I think one bought from Criswell. Are you, too, in the Frederick area?

Re: Service Body Trucks

I am germantown, wife works in downtown frederick and right now we are sharing. So I spending a lot of time on 270. I sorta like the idea of a 3500. I will have to do some more research on the subject

Re: Service Body Trucks

Oh yeah another thought that I had, do either of these guys have kids....
there may be times when my truck has to do baby carrier duty cause Grandma's house may have to find itself between home and work.
Did they get extended cabs or crew cabs and if they didnt was there any thought of where to put a kid?

finally, could you ask them why they didnt get them on pickup truck chassis?
