So I get an emergency service call this evening of "half the house isn't working" and "sometimes the lights flicker".... so I figure on a lost phase.. this is what I found..

.. I was told that the HO's brother is an electrician and put this panel in...

.. I'm guessin he did this to stop water leakin in..

I've seen a lot of old Challenger and other ITE style main breakers fry like that, most of them at the meter, though.

Out of curiosity does location make a difference?
Now that I think about it, I haven't seen many back fed mains in that style panel, so I would say that location may not be the problem. I used to work for a company that did a lot of apartment/condo service and we did a lot of meter breaker replacement. We even started doing preventative replacement in a couple of places.

I think EVERY single Challenger panel I've seen looked like that!

Trivia: What was the name of the first Space Shuttle to explode?
Answer: Challenger!

I'm just saying!
:D

meter breaker replacement

In that case I more than understand. The meter stack distribution equipment I have worked on all seemed to be JUNK. I did see some Square D meter stacks them seemed a bit better that most manufactures stacks.

We do service at a building that has Challenger meter stacks. The last 2 calls there required replacement of the meter breakers.

The 1st time I went there, I thought to myself, "I can't beleive they made meter stacks - or anyone would buy it"

Just remember Challenger was Zinsco & Sylvania in earlier years, cheap garbage.
What?? Challenger Electrical Equipment Corporation was a Westinghouse spinoff company until bought out by Cutler-Hammer.
