had a call come in at a residence - we dont do residential but this is a special customer. lighting struck near thier house and power went out. when it came on none of thier 220 loads worked. HWH, Heat pump. Im thinking a leg dropped. what is the most common answer?

Fried one leg, fried main breaker. I've seen one leg of a main breaker trip without dragging the other along for the ride, too. Try resetting/cycling the main. If you ask me, the whole place should be meggered too. Verify all GEC connections as still being solid (and, in fact, not fused off).

If the main panel has main fuses, then one might be blown. But why might be a question if there is no apparent damage in the home.

Obviously use a meter to check the incoming line voltages at the main panel.
