I am quoting a job to replace the meter pan and service conductors above the meter pan to the service head. Would like to leave the existing 3/4" EMT exiting the bottom of the meter pan into the basement. There is a LB at grade going through the footing. Is there any code directing replacment of this older stuff when changing top side stuff? Do you think the AHJ would demand a full replacment?

Thanks

Re: Service conductor maintenance

Correction, the EMT is 1", this is a 100 amp service w/#2 CU conductors.

Re: Service conductor maintenance

I think it depends on the condition. As long as it is safe, it is existing and can not be required to be changed unless there are local rules or you are upgrading. :D

Re: Service conductor maintenance

However, a 1" LB is NOT listed for use with #2 wire because of wire bending space requirements. According to manufacturer's data sheets, there is a maximum wire size based on the wire bending space in the LB.

In general, the chapter 9 conduit fills for 3 conductors in conduit will usually void the listing of a conduit body that is the same size. For 4 ore more conductors you will almost always meet the wire bending space requirement.

If you have any kind of bends in your conduit run you wire pull will always be easier if the conduit is 1 or 2 sizes larger than what the tables require. It even pays to use a larger conduit because of the savings in labor! See also fine print note #2 for jamming criteria.
