Does the NEC call for safety switch to be installed in line with residential meter when the load side of service entrance cable travels some specified distance into the home before it lands in load center? Does SSW need to be fused?

There is no specific distance. The service entrance conductors when not protected by an OCPD are limited as to how far into the building they may go. This is up to the AHJ to decide. Do you have a specific installation that you're concerned about?

Service Panel is located in basement, homeowner is adding addition. The service entrance cable will need to be installed beneath the addition floor for appox. 15 feet longer than existing cable.

You will have to check with AHJ on the distance. In Washington you cannot go over 15 feet inside the building. If you add an OCPD, then there's no limit.

The norm in NJ is under 5'....I have an application where I need to go about 8', the AHJ will allow my install w/o OCPD ~ provided I use RMC.

I agree that running RMC for 8' is much safer than SE cable. But the NEC doesn't stipulate that one method is allowed at greater distances than another. If the AHJ allows 8' for one wiring method he should allow it for all..

This has been a confusing issue for me over the years. Here we can go 5 ft. from meter base to a panel and still be considered a back to back service. It has to be in a conduit body. But if we underslab a service the meter has to be no lower than 5 ft to the center and can go as many feet as needed into a building and extend from the slab into a MBR panel. So we have at least 4 ft. from the underslab to the meter base and then another lets say 4 ft from the slab to the panel.4+4=8ft.?????I know the code says first point of entry but they will tag an install that has more than 5 ft of conduit if installed on the surface of a structure.
