service entrance cable

In a single family dwelling, after the meter, how far into the building can the service entrance cable extend before it is required to be terminated to the panel? I have been told you have to get to a disconnect within 6' of the conductors entering the building. Is there a code reference for this or could it be a local thing?
 
I have recieved "special permission" to run it in 8' from meter ....I have to decide if the cost of materials and labor for 2" RGC is worth it (vs. a ext. disco.).

8' of RMC will most likely be a safe installation, but the requirement is for nearest point of entrance of the service conductors. IMO if you allow 8' for RMC then it should be allowed for all wiring methods.
 
230.70(A)(1) Readily Accessible Location. The service disconnecting means shall be installed at a readily accessible location either outside of a building or structure or inside nearest the point of entrance of the service conductors.

Only the AHJ knows what "nearest the point of entrance" means...

I have no rebuttal.

The way the room will be laid out, that IS the "closest point" ...the 8' is hogged up by water meters and filters, central vac canister and a sump hole.

The "room" is about 12' long and will be 3' deep (to accomadate 110.26) ...the MCB panel will be the first you see when you open the door.

The EI is allowing the install, with that one requirement...I just have to get out a crayon and do the cost analysis before I decide which way I will do it.

I recently had a similar install where the GC put the sump pit where to panel was supposed to be. Inspector wanted a disconnect on the outside. Would have been about 6' into the basement. IMO that is too far and I agreed with him. I only got the EI involved to convince the GC that he had to pay for the extra since the sump was now in the wrong place.

:grin: A man after my own heart.

That's normally the only time I call the inspector too. When I want someone to agree with me! That way, I have someone else to blame the change order on. Nice to have someone to get your back like that.
