NEC Section 695.3 (A)(1) permits a separate service from a connection located ahead of but not within the service disconnecting means,as a power source for a fire pump. Would this service be considered a legally required system?

The reason for my asking is NEC Section 701.11(D) An additional service installed in accordance with Article 230,where acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction, is permitted to serve as a legally required source of power.

To minimize the possibility of simultaneous interruption of the legally required standby supply, a separate service drop or lateral must be electrically and physically separated from all other service conductors.

The key word may be (standby) The service to the Fire Pump is not a standby system but the primary feed.

I am going to be inspecting a fire pump installation, The service is underground in pvc. The pvc for the normal and fire pump services are very close and already buried. Both services will be going up the same pole and connected to the same service drop. If 701.11 (D) applies I don't think it is code compliant.

Comments appreciated.

Often, fire pumps are connected directly within the end box. In this case, they're running it all the way back to the pole, and you're questioning it's integrity?

Sorry I am not sure what the end box is. My question is does Nec 701.11 (D) apply.

After more consideration I should not have asked this question, because 701. 11 (D) applies to required standby systems. This application may not meet the requirements.

Thank you for your response.

1)701 would apply if you are requiring a generator as an alternate source to the utility power if not reliable.

2)the utility service is not a 701 system
