As far as the NEC is concerned, as long as the proper working space is provided no other consideration must be made. Be sure to check your local building codes, fire codes, and Fuel Gas codes.

Most jurisdiction and local gas companies will say 3' clearance from any point of ignition even A/C equipment from gas meter.

I think NFPA 54 requires a 24" or 36" seperation but my copy is at work!

The NEC is silent, as far as I know.

The POCO here is also the gas supplier, and I see them (the meters) right next to each other all the time. ("BGE": Baltimore Gas and Electric)

There may be both a horizontal minimum and a straight-line-in-any-direction minimum. Definitely check with both utilities (or both departments).

I can see the "gas is better" vs. "electricity is better" advertising coming from the same company.

TECO here supplies both electric and gas. They require 3 ft seperation between source of ignition and the gas VENT on the gas meter. There are times when the meter s fail to meet this distance and they just extend the vent to comply

Hey Larry, gas is better than electric when the power is off in Alaska. You can light your oven to keep the house from freezing up! Check here if in doubt. Some things I just don't miss!
