Ice is just another reason for a service lateral!

Doesn't do much good if the lateral ends up going up a pole to pick up power. Ice will take down the wires running down the street.

That's a lot of work to throw away when the hole saw is shot. You can only have them sharpened so many times before you're beyond the "bi-metal" part.

I've had it for 13 years now. If I ever wear it out, I'll just cut the blade off, leave the arbor, and weld on toothed stock.

I just don't use it every day. Maybe once or twice a year. And it sure makes OH services easy to line up.

I think I'll stick to the long pilot bit then man handling that monstrosity, How many guys to get that thing started anyhow?

Yea, but it's pretty darn cool.

I cut the botom hole. Then, with the smallest spade bit I can find, I don't remember the size but the paddle is not much larger than the shaft, extra long, I drill a pilot hole for the top cut from the bottom. The spade bit has a sharp point which alows me to bite into the wood without the bit walkin around as I'm trying to start it. For the most part I eyeball the pilot drill, and have good luck with it. Go up top and drill the top hole. I cut away the shingles first cause they seem to gum up my hole saws and ruin them.

Just one. That's all it takes. That's all it should take.

Plus, that's all that should be on the ladder.

Besides, you just need a drill with some power:

No offense, but by the time you get done with all that, I'm pushing my 2/0 up the riser.

That is one cool rig. I just take a 1/4" by 24" drill bit and drill stright as I can through the eve into the roof. Makes me a pre drilled hole for my hole saw's pilot bit.

How long do you think this mast is going to stay up?
I noticed the POCO has not even locked the meter to this service or made the final connection yet...so it must be very new.

I would have just installed a "house knob" and not supported the tri-plex on the riser. Notice how close the mast knob is to the eve anyway?

Always run you drill in reverse when cutting thru shingles, drywall or any other bit killing material. It will cut without affecting the teeth.

Thanks for the photo.

I had thought about making a tool-- 2" with end caps, or plates welded on each end, drilled center. after making the hole in the eaves, insert the 2", check for level, and then with long pilot bit drill up to the roof. This might be more steps but may not be so hard to handle.
