Is there anything in the NEC that prohibits the service panel for a house to be placed inside a garage? The garage will be attached to the home. Sub-panels I'm aware of and have seen in garages; I'm just not 100% sure if the main service panel is allowed to be in there as well.

I usually do work in NYC, most service panels go in the cellar or inside apartments. Just asking so i can avoid any possible change orders.
Correction on my own statement... most service equipment go in the cellar. In the apartments we'll place the regular panels coming out of a meter center.

Some of the building inspectors here call for two layers of sheetrock on walls dividing the residence from the garage. You might want to keep that in kind form panel depth.

I thought that was what Type X 5/8" Drywall (fire rated) was for?? Between the attached garage space and the house.

Yes, but some municipalities will allow a double layer to get to the same effective protection. Easier to obtain 1/2 inch rock than get the type X.
Have had some areas require double 5/8X for fire seperation between units on multiple family dwellings.
