I have a 2 store building. Top floor dwelling unit. Bottom floor store retail space. Calulated total load is 400a service. Total sq ft is 2400. Service will be 120/240 single phase. My question is are two services required by NEC or will 1 service and panel be o:k. No house panel is required.

Re: service & panel required

The building can be served by one service but will most likely require a service disconecting means for each occupancy.

Re: service & panel required

I don?t think the NEC ever requires more than one service to a single building. Sometimes it permits more than one service. That is for the cases in which there are separate owners or tenants who don?t want to pay for electricity on the basis of someone else?s estimate of how much of the meter is yours, and how much is mine. If you are talking about one owner or one tenant, then one meter is fine.

Re: service & panel required

One service is acceptable in this situation and happens all the time around here. The primary concern is the disconnecting means being group in a common location and the load centers then being properly wired with an isolated grounding conductor. Many times the installer provided a twin meter pack with the overcurrent / disconnects incorporated directly in the equipment.

It`s a POCO issue,do they allow multiple area`s to be served by 1 meter ???
