Where in the code book can I find specific info about residential service disconnect location. For example, if I have a meter located on the left rear of a house and the panel is in the garage, I was thinking there was a reference somewhere that said something about the requirements for having a means of disconnect outside at the meter, like a minimum footage or something like that. I am still looking myself but I am not sure if this is one of those instances I am remembering from something I heard or have actually seen in the code somewhere.

Re: service question??

yeah I see in my handbook under 270.30 (A) and it explains it all clearly that there is no minimum or maximum distance and it is up to the AHJ., Thanks.

Re: service question??

It is more opaque than clear but there is an answer there.
The service disconnect has to be either outside or nearest the point of entry of the service conductors.
That is where the ahj comes in. How far are you allowed to go is a crapshoot. I wouldn't expect anything over 10 feet to be considered nearest the point of entry. That is still too much to me.

Re: service question??

Another thing to consider is that you can keep the service entrance conductors on the outside of the building for an unlimited distance and then penetrate the wall directly into the back of the panel.

Re: service question??

I'd call the AHJ and ask them for a specific distance. The various jurisdictions I work in actually do each have a set distance that they allow before requiring a disconnect switch. Better to know in advance than having to put in the switch after the panel is up and running.

Re: service question??

In this particular instance there is SE cable run through the attic from the meter location to the panel. The panel is of course inside and the meter is located outside approx. 50 feet away on the oppoaite side of the house.

There is no gray area here; you deinitely need a disco at the meter for that distance. The run from the disco to the panel must have separate neutral and EGC, and they must be separate in the panel.
