Service receptacle for HVAC equipment

210.63. I need a service GFCI for a split unit 208 with neutral.
I know I can't go off the load side of the disconnect...but could I use one phase and the neutral (same circuit feeding the HVAC equipment) for the GFCI?
Tap at the line side of the HVAC unit disconnect to feed the service gfci? Basically eliminating the need to pull a separate 12/2 for the GFCI?

You can tap the line side conductors to supply the service receptacle assuming that the circuit is 20 amps or less, or you provide an OCPD for the receptacle where the circuit is larger than 20 amps.

You can get HVAC disconnect boxes with the GFCI in the box that work nicely in this application.

Around here in KCMO area they do not allow splitting off the disconnect, as disconnects are not junctions. Service outlet (120 vac) must be isolated and dedicated, but can come off any 120vac source in the building other than lighting.

So 312.8 was deleted from the code in your area?

Hvac guy I work around laughs at that requirement, even his pump is cordless.

312.8 was not deleted, as it has more to do with box fill. It gas more to do with not using a disconnect as a through-way or junction. They wont let me run thermostat wire in the disconnect to an RTU, let alone a 120v circuit. It has to have a separate conduit.

I don't understand...that section very specifically permits splices, taps and feed through conductors in the disconnect enclosure.
The NEC would not permit the Class 2 thermostat wire in the disconnect.

Sounds like an inspector doesn't understand what 312.8 is saying.
