Can anyone tell me what if any differences exist between a standard 3p motor and an AC servo motor and what one should look for when meggering an AC servo motor. Thanks guys!!

Servo Motor's are generally perminate magnet motors instead of induced. As far as meggering I don't know or anything you should do different.

Performance wise or construction wise? They are apples and oranges in both matters, but if all you want to know is how to test the stator windings, then they are similar enough not to be worried about.

I worked on syncro-servo antanae systems in the Navy. They were very complicated and I wonder if these systems are similar to servo motors used in industry. I find myself not realy knowing enough about these systems to be able to trouble shoot them with the same confidence I have with a regular 3p motors and VFD's. If anyone could direct me to a source of info on industrial servo motor systems it would be much appreciated. Also these systems I'm dealing with these days are European in origin. Does that make a difference??
Thanks guys.:)

Old school

Old school

The servo moters that I worked on (in the Navy) had a three phase stator that went to all the slaves in parallel. It also had a single phase rotor winding (exciter) also in parallel with all the slaves and driven from the mains.

There was also, at times, servo amplifiers involved.

From a megger point of view, the stator would look like any three phase motor while the rotor would look like any wound rotor.
