Ok...how do you guys set telephone poles??? Do you own a Digger/Derrick truck, hire it done??? We set some today w/ the following equip. Skid steer and post hole digger, Backhoe w/ pallet forks, Skid steer w/ pallet forks and loader tractor and pallet forks. Set (3) 40' telephone poles in 2 hours.

Also, pulled 230' of (3) 4/0 AL feeders by myself thursday. Barley broke a sweat....Using my work truck, two 8" shives, 9/16" bull rope, and some lube....Used one shive to guide wire into 2" pvc, and the other to pull "over" on the other end of 2'' pvc. Worked slick as snot on a door knob....or something like that!!!!

How deep did you set the poles and what type of post hole digger??

Hopefully, it is at least 10% of the pole height + two feet. The digger, that could be anything from hand diggers & spoons to a digger truck. :)

I lived in an area at one time where you could pay the power company and they would come out and set poles if you needed them.

If you have this book

It shows how to set a pole with just 5 guys, a plank, a couple of long pike poles and some rope. :D

Here here.
Exact figures POCO groundman use. Don't forget to bury the solid-copper ground conductor with the pole, and leave holes covered so kids don't fall in.

. . . bury the solid-copper ground conductor with the pole. . .
We actually use 6 AWG Cu to a 5/8" X 10' driven ground rod with up to 2 extensions to get 25Ω measured. If we don't get 25Ω after 30', we walk since the NESC doesn't have a 25Ω requirement for the MGN rods. I assure you, other electric utilities do it differently. :)

I was just visiting the lineman side, as a traveler; my unsupervised observations likely missed that ground rod, and proper NESC code.
