Can some one please clarify what severe physical damage is when pertaining to RMC as opposed to EMT. We are working in a mechanical room doing some pipe work there are no specs on the job. Someone has mentioned to me that anything in a mechanical room that contains pumps, compressors and the like
have to have heavywall up to 7 ft and after that height you can use thinwall.
Someone have any answers? Is severe physical damage vehicular or moving machinery such as forklifts or cranes ?

Thanks Rich

Since my background is mostly as a service electrician, I've seen many things that have been severely physically damaged. The lion's share of this damage was done by forklifts, motor vehicles, lawn maintenance equipment, and similar conveyances. On your job, my opinion is that unless they drive forklifts through that area, you don't have anything that is subject to severe physical damage. That said, some occupancies and some contractors have their own rules of thumb on that sort of thing. In recent memory was a military installation that wants anything 10' AFF done in RMC. Whatever they want to pay for, I'm game.

Marc, I would have bet the house that you were going to post a definition. I did several searches and got nothing.

Chris, there is no definition.

I guess you could say that the guy on the left below is just damaged and the guy on the right is severly damaged, who knows.

I know theres no NEC def., but last time I needed a def. Marc had one from another document. He's good at that kind of stuff.

Well, regardless of whether there is a definition somewhere, the truth is, everything is subject to severe physical damage, it all has to do with how big your mowing (or any) equipment is.

:D

Severe Physical Damage is a term that has no real meaning.

Some of the worst damage I have witnessed is from water in busways.

Fork lifts hitting busway does a decent job also.

From a pipe stand point fork lifts and trucks and I doubt Rigid would have helped one bit in the cases I have seen.
