On a project, the architect is using "shaft wall construction" for a fire rated wall. I'm not sure if I have to do anything to fire proof 4 square boxes in these walls. I have heard others talk about "fire rated putty packs". Do I need to spec. these or something else? Where can I find more info on the putty packs?

(I know this is a little out of the scope of the NEC, but I'll bet a lot of you have had to deal with fire ratings before.)

Thanks in advance:
Steve

Re: Shaft wall construction

2002 NEC 300.21 titled Spread of Fire or Products of Combustion requires firestop systems.

2003 IBC 707.8 titled Penetrations requires firestop systems.

2003 707.8.1 prohibits "Penetrations other than those necessary for the shaft..."

Unless the boxes installed in the shaftwall are required as part of the shaft and serve the shaft, they are not permitted to be there.
