Shallow GFI Receptacle

Another joy of working older dwellings is the unbelivably shallow device boxes they used and being on the hook to install GFI's as part of modernization. Does anybody make a lower profile GFI receptacle that might prevent one from having to tear out the original box and installing a larger capacity one in it's place? GFI breakers are usually not an option as these older places have had too many unqualified hands mixing up neutrals over the years.

Leviton or Lutron have a low profile GFCI, it's ~ 17 dollors 5 more than a regular one.

I just saw them at a box store.

I didn't search by store but it was a orange box and Leviton has a small profile GFCI

I'd just use a Wiremold shallow extension box (5747?) and call it a day. No need to rip out the existing box; just attach the base of the extension box to it.

ASAIK. Leviton is the only manufacturer that has the slim GFCI.

Why not upgrade the -J- box and make money.

You might have to use non metallic extenstion box if there is no ground in that old wiring of knob and tube . ;-)
