A few years ago, a new apprentice I worked with (he was four weeks on the job) got a severe cut on his inside wrist from an 8' fixture.
He had just been told to be very carefull not to get cut on those things, too.

This 18-yr-old kid bravely taped it up and somewhat stupidly kept working. After an hour or so he mentioned that he really couldn't
move his last two fingers very well.

So one of the guys took him in. He had to have the tendons reattached, and some other specialized surgery as well (probably to
connect something from the brain to the body pain sources).

Mind your hands

Mind your hands

I got the afternoon off to get 5 stitches in my knuckle from a bathroom fan box. Had it installed, during a resi rough wire, grabbed a staple out of my belt and reached up to secure the NM and my hand went a little to close to the box. Barely even hurt but the next thing I know I'm bleeding all over and I've got a cut that was just a little larger then usual. I thought about being the tough guy and continue working but figured better to get sewed up then an infection. The numbing of the wound prior to suturing was more painful then the cut. For fluoro's I usually wear gloves and if not I pay attention to wear I put my hands on the fixture becasue as was said them things are sharp.

I thought it was mandatory to make a blood offering to make sure everything goes smoothly.

A few weeks ago I was at the supply house when this old timer came in with one of those cheap two-bulb fixtures with a dome held on with three screws. It was about 40 years old. He was looking for a relay to replace the one that controlled the light. As I look closer, I realized that to fit the relay he had taken stainless steel sheet (about the thickness of a beer can) and glued a 2" strip into the top of the fixture. I literally felt weak when I thought of some unsuspecting electrician going to remove that light and getting all cut up on it.

I get cut all the time . . . so what ? I have short fat fingers and I'd screw up a bowling ball trying to work with gloves. band-aids ? you gotta be kiddin. if the cuts too big for elect tape use duct tape (personally I like to bleed all over the place, but if there are finishes, well, I'll oblige.) Bleeding is actually very good for you, in case you didn't know, men get build up of iron in their bodies if they don't bleed now and then, so think of it as a healthy thing. if you are a lady electrician, well, then maybe you have a good reason not to.
