What is the going rate for Shift Differential Pay? I usually never work nights, but the boss took on a 11 restaurant remodels that are all overnight work. The only problem is he's not paying us any Shift Differential Pay. Bad enough my summer is all messed up with these jobs, but we are all upset hes not opening up his wallet a little further for our inconvenience.

I've seen it as much as 5% per shift (who wants to work 11-7?), but that means that it is your regular shift and you work it all the time that also means that there are multiable shifts.

A temporary change in your working hours is not really a shift differential, just a change in working hours. I've done many a service change where the order was don't come in tomorrow morning, I'll see you at 8:00 PM and we'll put in our 8.

I do sympathize with you as I wouldn't want to do it.

At one company I worked it was 10% more to work a night project. Night projects had to be at least a week and could be for quite long.

The company I work for now has a $ amount per hour for night work. For example helpers might get $5 more, licensed $7.50 and Foreman $10 more per hour.

At either company a summer of night work would get you differential pay.

Around here it is 10% premium plus you work 7.5 hours and get paid for 8 for 2nd shift work I beleive 3rd shift is work 7 hours for 8 hours pay plus the 10% as above.

Also these projects have to run at least 2 weeks.

I'd love to work nights for the summer and have the days off. I'd take a pay cut for that.

I do think you should get more for working nights. But maybe your boss took these jobs because he doesn't have much other work coming up. Maybe it was that or stay home.:-? Any other insight you can offer.

In any event you should talk to the boss and tell him how you feel. If I have an employee with something on his mind, I like to know.

I wired most of these restaurants and the owners wanted me to do the additional work. As for letting the boss know how we feel...we did. "I'll see what I can do." Well, we're 6 weeks into this and nothing has been done. Even overtime for our Sunday work would be nice. Double time would be even better :)

I used to work for a good sized company that had dedicated seperate divisions; res construction, res service, comm construction, comm service, industrial. The restuarant work they picked up was done by the comm service guys and they got time and a half for all hours worked other than their usual 8-4:30.
The company I work for now does commercial new construction only and when we have to do night work, you have to beg, borrow, plead, steal to get an extra $1 an hour. I supervised a large project that required creative staffing-I was working 10 pm to 8 in the morning and had a crew working the standard 7 to 3:30. When the job was done, I got a bonus check, it was less than a weeks pay and I told myself I would never work that hard again. I make myself scarce when the night sift comes up nowadays, and there seems to be plenty of guys at the company who would rather work all night than keep their wives company.

Maybe since your boss can't "see what he needs to do" you should approach him with a solution. Cash is king, but compensation can be had in many ways-an extra weeks paid vacation, company fishing or hunting trip (no antlers on the boss), knock down, drag out party at the boss's house for his wife to clean up after....

All I can say now that I have a little more background is that I would never have my guys go there for their standard rate.

But I would still love to have days off in the summer....

IBEW (My local anyways) pays 10% for 2nd shift and 15% for third

This is what our contract states. And the 3rd shift is 7 hours work for 8 hours pay. However, there must be 3 around the clock shifts to implement this wage schedule. If a job is night work only, then it's all time and a half.

For the OP, without a working agreement, there is nothing you can do but accept whatever the boss is willing to offer, or quit.

Night work should be reserved for true emergencies.
Too many times it's the result of children playing around with spreadsheets. It looks good on paper such that having a grown, highly talented, well qualified, professional electrician working on some stupid project in the middle of the night will allow the proprietor to have his cake and eat it too. That is, he gets his remodel and also gets to keep his income flowing in.
If the night shift differential were $100 per hour, then perhaps there would be a more reasonable playing field.

Its only fun the first night...

It would be fun for at least a month if it were summertime. I like to waterski. No can do after dark.;)

But I realize that for many this would be a burden. And I'd hate it if it weren't summer...

Yeah we wouldn't want to help keep a business mans cash flow going then he might beable to pay us.

I don't see the reason people should get payed more for working at night for a while. We don't do night work but if I needed too I would. Is this guys shop a large outfit or small? if he is a small shop he may have to take the work to keep you busy. getting a paycheck is better than being laid off is it not?

I did a few night jobs, I thought it would be great also, maybe you would like it, I dont know, all I know is that it stunk because I had to wait all day to go to work, I guess I'm much better at just getting up and going...

I ran two different four month night projects and have worked many few week night time projects. I would never say it was fun. You still need to sleep and it is tough on the family as even when it's the weekend your adjusted to being asleep in the day and wide awake at night.
