I ran two different four month night projects and have worked many few week night time projects. I would never say it was fun. You still need to sleep and it is tough on the family as even when it's the weekend your adjusted to being asleep in the day and wide awake at night.

I had the same problem, I even got addicted to No-Doze... just kidding.

I don't see the reason people should get payed more for working at night for a while. We don't do night work but if I needed too I would. Is this guys shop a large outfit or small? if he is a small shop he may have to take the work to keep you busy. getting a paycheck is better than being laid off is it not?

I don't see why I need to inconvenience myself for the convenience of someone else without being properly compensated.

My personal policy is that I get paid time and a half to work nights. This doesn't exactly jive with the company policy, which would explain why I don't do any night shifts.

After a couple of times of me saying no, the boss doesn't even bother asking me anymore, he just gets one of the other guys to do it.

I have a friend who worked for the Social Security administration here in Woodlawn. They needed electricians on site 24-7-365.
He changed shifts every 2 weeks. I have no idea how he could do that.
He changed positions there to a more office position, but he said those few years of constant shift changes were tough on him and the family.

You could be fired for refusing to work. Just a thought.....

There is more than 1 Electrical contractor around, fire me, I will work somewhere else.

My issue is that I was hired at a negotiated rate of pay to work the hours of 7am to 3:30pm Monday thru Friday. Any deviation of that schedule also comes with a re-negotiation of pay.

Don't expect me to put myself and my family thru extra stress and hassles and not get compensated for that inconvenience.

If you want me to work nights I want time and a half. If you don't want to pay time and a half, that's fine, find someone else to work nights. If the only work you have for me is night work then lay me off and I will find other work if necessary.

I don't belong to the "I do this because I love electrical work and it is all I ever dream of " club that some on this site belong to. While I don't hate my job, I don't love it and I do this for one reason....... a paycheck!

If the paycheck someone is offering doesn't appear to be proper compensation for the task they are requiring me to complete, I have no problem going out to find a better deal.

As I said in my original post, this is not an issue at my current job because there are plenty of other guys that love to bend over backwards to help the company and only ask for an extra couple bucks compensation in return.

THEY CAN HAVE IT! I'll stick to 7-3:30, thanks anyway.

I belive.....

I belive.....

I belive that this is why the unions are around????? I am a union contractor, although i do not agree w/ all policys (never did w/ some when was apprentice) You should make a bit more for night work if you work days normally. when we work nights, my guys make more,.....just part of it. I personally like the nights, FREE DAYTIME!!!!

Just curious, do you pay your guys overtime whenever they work nights ?

After my complaining to the boss, we are now getting overtime for Sunday night, but nothing else for the rest of the week. If you think it'd be great to work nights and have the day off, read on. I get home at 5:30 AM and don't get to sleep until 7:00 AM. Then I sleep very little form 7 AM to about 1 PM. Remember its daytime. Road construction a block away, neighbors mowing the lawn in the morning, sunlight trying to stream through my bedroom blinds. I simply can't sleep during the day. That leaves a few hours to do stuff after you get up, but you don't wanna do anything that might tire you out because you know your gonna be up all night again at work. Then to top it all off, your weekends are screwed up as well. You can't go out Sunday with friends and have a few beers. Remember, your going back to work at 7 PM.

Honestly, I'd rather take a lay-off then go through this crap the entire summer.

Those are my thoughts exactly, if you're gonna do all that, it needs to be worth it financially. I don't understand the thought process where people think an extra 3 or 4 bucks an hour is gonna make someone want to put themselves out like that.

Time and a half or stay home, those are my thoughts.

I'm just glad to have a job.

Me too, I did shift work for 15 years and until the last 4 years I wasnt paid a dime extra for it, you do what it takes to get the job done. There are thousands of un-employed eletricians that would take your place in a heart beat, heck there are 1,400 IBEW electricians out of work in the city of Detroit alone.
