greed is so ugly.

couple years ago, i did some work for a chiropractor.

he was a level 14 PITA, and after it was said and done, a check for $2k
bounced. i swore i'd never do work for him again.

2 years go by, and i get another call today from his office manager. needs a
piece of equipment hooked up. $1,500, material cost out of that less than
$100, so it's 1,400 clear for three or four hours work.

with work being as good as it is right now, ya just hate to turn down a quickie.

what do you do when the bile is in the back of your throat, and the money's
in front of your nose? swallow? puke? get the money up front? :D

with a person of my phenomenal ethical standards, being a whore is just so difficult.

Ethics are over rated but common sense is not so yes I would want the money up front.

I would take the money.

BUT with the guy being a PITA, and bouncing a check on me, its going to go like this:

-I pencil in the date/time.
-They fax me signed work order and a copy of a cashiers check for $1500 made out to me 48hrs before they want me there, then i confirm.
-I show up, they show me the cashiers check in person and I get a wet ink signature on the work order before I lift a finger.
-I do job, then leave with my cashiers check.

I wouldn't want to be the next patient if i worked for him again! Sorry, but you know the saying about "DO ME ONCE, ETC,ETC" --- He stuck you for the two grand?? Or did his check just bounce???

A: Did you eventually get your money from the first job?

B: If so, do the work (assuming you have a means to ensure payment like a cashier's check, pre-payment, etc), charge extra for your aggravation, and smile all the way to the bank.

I know people who are ok with the fact they get charged extra because they know they are difficult, and are proud of it. To each his own, as long as I get mine.

I'd ask for the money up front as well but I bet you won't get it. He'll have some kind of excuse or He'll get someone else.

It seems you already made up your mind.

Are you looking for assurance from someone in case you go through it again?

Get the money up front. If they complain, tell them you are not in the banking business and they had problems paying you before.

This time it's their turn to trust you with the money.

Go do the work because I'm dying to see how this plays out. Meanwhile, I'll scour the internet for some cliffhanger type soap opera sound bytes...

I'd say it means there's more red flags than a Chinese Pride Parade.

nope. not red flags, stall horns in the cockpit. :D

most of you said what i'm gonna do. get the money first. all of it. in a check
i can hammer at the bank it's drawn on, before i start work, or buy material.

and a signed work order with clear exclusions and inclusions.

and yes, of course i got paid the last time, silly....:D

i deposited the check in my business account, and when it bounced, i went
down to his office, parked across the driveway, with my flashers on, and went
in to discuss the matter. the fellow was standing in his lobby, with patients all
around, and asked me, "how's it going, ace?" in a boisterous voice.

i replied, "it was fine till your check bounced".

it got quiet then. his office manager didn't say a word, just went in and wrote
another check on the spot... i took it, and said i was going to the branch it
was drawn on to cash it, and was it good, as he really didn't want me to come
back again, did he?

truth be told, he must have ran out of people to call. i never figured to hear
from him again.

ps - a level 14 PITA is one order of magnitude worse than a level three PITA,
and as we all know, those are pretty bad.

reminds me, when I was overseas, got a mild case of dysentary, go see the medic, he says, 'here, drink this' (tincture of belladonna). and then he says
'if that don't work, come on back, we got more.':grin:
