I agree with Larry,

A photocell is not a "externally operable switch or circuit breaker that will open all ungrounded conductors."

Photocell is a switch

Photocell is a switch

A photocell is considered a switch. When the twist lock photocell is removed from the base the ungrounded conductors are opened. IMO this is the same thing as a weater proof toggle switch mounted on the sign, which I have seen in the past. Also if you can unplug a sign and meet the requirements I don't see how this would not be as safe. You have the photocell in your possesion while you are working on the equipment.

Apparently you didn't get the answer you wanted to hear.

A photocell does not meet the requirments of 600.6. Plain and simple.

Ouch quit it.

That's it???
We are not going to drag this one for 10 or more pages?

Well, I suppose we could debate the whole "Is a photocell as switch?" argument, but it's nowhere near as exciting as "Is a switch an outlet?"

We could.

Article 100
Disconnecting Means. A device, or group of devices, or other means by which the conductors of a circuit can be disconnected from their source of supply.

His twist out photo cell would meet the above definition.

Pete most all photocells are indeed switches, no debate. :p

Are you familiar with the twist out photocells Johnny is referring to?

Yes, I am. I've replaced a few. :)

I know they are switches, I just was hoping to add some fuel to the fire, but there was nothing there to turn into a 300 post thread. :(

But is a photocell an "outlet"? After all, it does not take current, it gives current.

(Now I'll run away, before the barrage of spitballs starts to fly. )

Well, photocells do require a neutral, so yes, I think they're an outlet. And they need AFCI protection.
